Yesssss, that is one tract of poptimism I could get behind.
And also, The Silicone Veil you guys. So good. (Though admittedly less poppy than Ten Love Songs.)

Don’t forget that music also sucks if teenage girls like it. I mean, if a man in his twenties can’t relate to it, is it even music?

The way she sings “you look just like a movie” on When We Were Young melts me. This is everything an Adele album needs to be.

Fellow 9th hitter here. A coach once advised me to try and get hit by a pitch, cause it was the only way I’d get on base.

Sort of like listening to “25” on purpose, so you can comment on an Adele thread.

I didn’t feel the authenticity in “Someone Like You” … something about it makes it come across like a cover, like Adele is attempting to channel the genuine heartbreak that was the inspiration for the “original” artist.

But perhaps that’s because I first heard it in the context of the album. By the time that song comes around in a front-to-back listen of 21, her woe-is-me schtick feels incredibly hollow and inauthentic. Now, vocally, I think Adele is a once-in-a-generation talent … but the nature of her music makes it so much better as single, radio material.

There’s a whole world of great cathartic pop singers to explore before surrendering to the reign of Adele. I know It’s the same name again and again, but you could try Marina and the Diamonds’ Froot and the always amazing, always underrated, Susanne Sundfor’s Ten Love Songs.

Yeah that’s totally true, but Janelle is a much more imaginative artist. Looking past the fact that her albums are bold concept albums. She just has a lot of ideas in general, whether that’s her artistic vision with Wondaland Records or her varied musical styling/characterizations on her albums.

This is just my 2 cents – Janelle’s vision and execution is vibrant in her output, and as great as Adele is she simply operates in specific MOR wheel house of sound and emotion.

Haha yeah, I was just being a pedantic stathead snob. I shoulda hashtagged it as such. It’s a situational thing anyway and subject to many more factors than just: “This is what Bill James or Nate Silver once wrote, I think.” I just don’t get many opportunities to talk baseball on Stereogum.

I was gonna let this dog lie but I can’t. The concept of putting a line-up together based solely on Sabermetrics is flawed. Sabermetrics do indicate that your overall “best” hitter should bat 2. But if you have an absolute speed merchant as your leadoff hitter then a more traditional lineup is advisable. IE having a bat control guy at 2 followed by your best hitter at 3 and your power guys at 4 and 5. AKA – the old school way to set up a lineup. Bochy has one 3 World Series in the past 6 years with a traditional line-up. Sabermetrics are nice. But old school remains the best school. The Giants relative dominance of the MLB this decade speak volumes against a slavish adherence to Sabermetrics.

And now…..baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack to Adele!!!!

Also, to those that think specific people will buy 25 I can assure you a multitude of people want 25. On my iPod it’ll jump from Adele to Marilyn Manson’s Pale Emperor. If you are a true music fan you buy the stuff you love regardless of who it was initially marketed to. Also, can we please get Duffy back into the game?! Her last effort was so underrated!!!
