Dave Grohl and Greg Kurstin held their third annual Hanukkah Sessions this year, continuing a tradition that they started in 2020. This year’s covers all stemmed from a live performance that took place in Los Angeles earlier this month, and so far they’ve tackled songs by Blood, Sweat & Tears, Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more. The sessions wrapped up tonight with a cover of Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.,” and the pair recruited Beck, Karen O, and Tenacious D to perform it alongside them. Watch video below.

In 2020, Dave Grohl and Greg Kurstin started The Hanukkah Sessions, a series of eight new covers released over the eight nights of the holiday. They did it again last year and this year they’re going even bigger. Earlier this month, the pair held an in-person event to tease this year’s contributors and cover selections.

Last year, Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl — with some help from producer Greg Kurstin — set in motion a plan to release eight new cover songs for Hanukkah. These were called The Hanukkah Sessions. Well, this year the pair will release some new sessions, apparently recorded at Largo in Los Angeles. The low-profile show, which went down last night (December 5), featured a bevy of special guests including Beck, Tenacious D, Karen O, Pink, Judd Apatow, and Kurstin’s the Bird And The Bee bandmate Inara George.

Last night, Judd Apatow held a benefit show at the Largo in Los Angeles to raise money for Victims First. Beck was the only musician advertised as a headliner, but he brought along some special guests. Toward the end of his set, he was joined by Tenacious D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass, John C. Reilly, Greg Kurstin, and Dave Grohl, in one of his first public appearances since Taylor Hawkins’ death. They covered the Seals & Crofts hit “Summer Breeze” — Jim Seals, one-half of the duo, passed away earlier this year. Watch video below.

Today, Adele has finally released the LP’s lead single “Easy On Me.” It’s her first new song in just shy of six years.

Huge on TikTok, just barely past her teens, drenched in nostalgia for Y2K-era dance music, founded on overt sampling, intersecting with prevailing movements like bedroom pop and hyperpop and the pop-punk revival — this still mostly anonymous 20-year-old university student from South London could not be more zeitgeisty if she tried. And with the release of her debut mixtape to hell with it this Friday, she becomes the latest organic viral sensation to be swept up into the major-label machine.

Nirvana reunion alert! Last week, Dave Grohl released the first song he’d ever recorded with his 15-year-old daughter Violet. On his Dave’s True Stories website, Grohl explained that he’d learned that he was distantly related to DJ Bonebrake, drummer for the great LA band X, and that’s why he and Violet banged out their version of X’s 1980 rager “Nausea.” Dave played all the instruments, and Violet sang, coming surprisingly close to evoking the fearsome presence of X’s Exene Cervenka. Last night, Grohl and Violet played their “Nausea” cover on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and they had help.

Sia has dropped a new song. She debuted "Saved My Life," which was co-written by Dua Lipa and produced by Greg Kurstin, during her performance on Americare's COVID Is No Joke comedy benefit livestream last night. The Bird And The Bee is a duo comprising singer Inara George and multi-instrumentalist and pop super-producer Greg Kurstin, who produced Adele's "Hello," Sia's "Chandelier," and dozens of other hit songs. They've already shared two singles from their upcoming covers album Interpreting The Masters: A Tribute To Van Halen, starting with a rework of "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love," from Van Halen’s 1978 self-titled debut. That was followed by their cover of "Panama" from 1984.

In a couple weeks, Vox Lux will be in theaters nationwide. The film, which seems like a twisted dark-timeline version of A Star Is Born, stars Natalie Portman as the adult version of a pop star that became famous as a teenager in the wake of a school shooting. Last month, we got its first trailer, and today a second trailer has been released featuring one of the original songs that were written for the movie by Sia and Greg Kurstin.

Two decades ago, smooth jams ruled the pop charts. Usher, K-Ci & JoJo, Next, Brandy and Monica, Lauryn Hill, and Divine were just some of the R&B acts who topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998. But amidst all the slick beats there emerged a goofy, lite rap-rock jam that was so undeniable, it managed for one week to interrupt the extended reign of Monica's solo smash "First Night." The track was Barenaked Ladies' "One Week," written by Ed Robertson, who readily admits it's a weird song whose success was a total fluke.

Chvrches teased a new song called "Get Out" yesterday, and now it's here to hear. The Scottish synth-pop trio's first new song since 2015's Every Open Eye is one of the tracks they worked on with mainstream hit-maker Greg Kurstin -- the material they said would be "the most pop stuff we've done." And although it's true they've come back sleeker and shinier than ever, "Get Out" (not a reference to the acclaimed Jordan Peele horror-comedy of the same name, as far as we know) mostly sounds like the Chvrches of old. Specifically it reminds me of their sublime "The Mother We Share," but I'll let you decide whether that resemblance is a positive or a negative. Listen below.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lauren Mayberry said that their new material is "the most pop stuff we've done and also the most aggressive and vulnerable at the same time."

Foo Fighters have announced that their ninth studio album, which is called Concrete And Gold, will be out on 9/15. Paul McCartney has revealed that he's working on a new solo album with American superproducer Greg Kurstin. NME reports that in a new interview with BBC Radio 6 to promote his Flowers In The Dirt reissue, McCartney said, “I’m making a new album which is great fun. I’m in the middle of that. I’m working with a producer I first worked with two years ago on a piece of music I’m doing for an animated film."

A couple of months ago, we learned that Sia was writing original music to soundtrack the upcoming Rooney Mara pop star drama Vox Lux. But she must really love Rooney Mara, because that's not the only Rooney Mara movie she's contributing music to. She also wrote the theme song to the new Australian-American-British film Lion, which stars Dev Patel as a man searching for his Indian birth family 25 years after being adopted by Australians. (Rooney Mara plays his girlfriend.) "Never Give Up," produced by frequent collaborator Greg Kurstin, is a big Sia pop anthem with a few Bollywood flourishes, and you can hear it below.

Sia is a pop star in her own right now, albeit a bit of an odd one, but she's been writing songs for other pop stars for years. Her upcoming album This Is Acting is a collection of songs originally written for other people, and we've already heard singles "Alive," "Bird Set Free," and "One Million Bullets." The latest, "Cheap Thrills," is a tropical house-accented pop number that was intended for Rihanna, written with the help of producer Greg Kurstin. The track premiered on Beats 1 today, and you can hear it below.
