Props to this shout-out. I’m a pal of Joseph’s here in Toronto (and by pal I mean, I bought a record of his from his porch, gave him a smoke once, etc.) but only just recently got around to finally listening to the new effort/collab. It’s so beautiful. I think a lot of people here will take to it, though that hadn’t necessarily occurred to me before you mentioned it! His solo record from last year is also painstakingly beautiful.

I obviously agree with this sentiment and also want to add that you need more metal in your life, raptor. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting at least a dozen 10+ minute songs. Adam needs to release that monster as a stand-alone vinyl EP stat, Gorguts’ Pleiades’ Dust style.

I need this in my life.

The problem is that it only really fits WoD from the bands listed (which, all the albums namedchecked are personal faves) and fitting them into a single category is tough. I might just go with “Children of WoD”

Great article. Great band. Saw them live in 2018 and it was as awesome as I was expecting. I’m also pumped for a return to keys/synths ala Slave Ambient, which I sometimes think is still their best album (it’s not, that’s Lost in the Dream, but sometimes…).

Anyone else having the problem of wanting to pre-order the vinyl, but also thinking that a SO might already have it on their holiday gift list? What to do?? Because I really want to have that record in my hands as soon as it’s available.

That second HGM live album is a real highlight of the year. Having seen them 6 (!) times already, it really captures the energy of one of their better shows. I mean, they’re all great, but a few are transcendent.

That Trace Mountains album really is underrated

I had forgotten about that whole saga but coincidentally was just thinking about it last night. WOD definitely came out on top at the time, but it’s just become so painfully clear how much so judging the respective outputs of Kozelek and WOD since then…

Seems like a lot of bands are finding sweet spots in exploring those worlds. The Killers last album is decidedly Drugsian, and Wild Pink’s whole aesthetic seems The Death Cab On Drugs. Throw in that really underrated Trace Mountains album from this year and you’ve got the makings of a whole little micro genre of Wodcore. Call it New Weird Americana maybe?

“… you just gotta have the whole thing…” is music, and will eventually be sweet music, to our ears. The mere possibility of a WOD “Microphones in 2020” song-album (salbum? along?) has me excited!

New Stereogum has had more teething problems than Shane MacGowan.

This makes me so happy. Reminds me of when Broken Social Scene talked about trimming down “It’s All Gonna Break” and couldn’t do it either. We need more bands that understand the necessity of long songs.

But seriously, this was a great read Ryan. I’m hopeful we’ll hear some new WOD soon, when the songs are ready, but for now, I’m excited to immerse myself in LIVE DRUGS when it arrives.
