yes 2017 was the year charli fans ate! and she technically did 3 albums that year but one of them leaked. are there many albums as legendary as xcx3 without actually being released or even technically existing at all?

I don’t know about official top ten lists, but King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Brockhampton both had a great 2017. KGATLW released 5 records, and Brockhampton had the Saturation trilogy.

Yeah her vocals and lyrics are amazing. I feel that same sense of uniqueness and excitement with Frances of Hop Along. Something about the gravely-ness of her voice does it for me.

In addition to Big Thief, 2019 will also see two releases from Sunn O))) (Life Metal and the upcoming Pyroclasts) AND the freshly announced Amon Tobin (Fear in a Handful of Dust and October’s upcoming Long Stories). These three are going to RUN my year’s top 10.

Even without knowing she quietly came out a few months ago on her IG I’m kind of surprised people didn’t pick up on Orange being about queer love, albeit one in which Adrianne can only think of her partner’s death while making out in bed with her.

This is kind of beside the point of my enjoyment of this band but, it was a nice surprise to read that Adrienne is queer and has a gf! I like that we’re all moving away from making queerness a big talking point, but visibility is important and this made me very happy

Big Thief is one of those bands that at first glance don’t register as a riff-y, rocking guitar band, but as one familiarizes themselves with their songs, the arpeggiated and claw hammering riffs that Lenker churns out, despite their asymmetry as Meek alludes to in the above profile, is something that anybody that finds themselves humming the rhythmic guitar parts of songs should love.

I think Masterpiece is Big Thief’s most rocking album so far, but we’ll see if Two Hands dethrones it. Masterpiece has more upbeat songs with big guitar moments and squealing feedback and whatnot. It’s kinda in the same vein as those early Wye Oak albums.

Each song on both albums definitely speak to that.

You might like “Shark Smile” off of Capacity, the guitar on that one is pretty neat. And “Jenni” off UFOF is slow but pretty heavy, especially towards the end

Their albums really aren’t that long, so you might as well just listen to all of Masterpiece and Capacity and see what sticks

Alternative tunings, landing bass and snare hits on the back beats in interesting time signatures, and economical arrangements that up the potency of their song’s delivery.

Big Thief are fucking MASTERS y’all.

There’s a good chance Big Thief will take my number 1 & 2 spots on AOTY list. I’m putting together my fave albums of the 2010s right now and U.F.O.F. is happily in my top 5… This band fucking rules.
