Here’s a thing that bugs me. Why is that people can’t understand how others aren’t into this album? In ONE paragraph of the P4K review the words Gipsy Kings, Chieftains, Indigo Girls, and Rusted Root are used. That’s in one paragraph. There are many many paragraphs where equally possibly alienating bands and genres from the past are cited as influences. Many people hate all that shit. If you like it that’s f’ing great. But don’t be surprised when people don’t want to hear Vampire Weekend collaborate with one of the Haims on Kacey Musgraves inspired duets. Jesus Christ do I have to explain why some people ain’t keen on that shit? Look, I love Jens Lekman and his deadpan delivery and songs about cutting your hand while preparing for a picnic. I love Deafheaven where a dude screams at you for anywhere from five to ten minutes. What I DON’T do is come on here and tell people “you should like this. how do you not like this? are you even listening? try again! Listen to Black Brick. Then you’ll GET IT. you’ll 100% unlock the mystery of not only Deafheaven but ALL BLACK METAL!! and then you can listen to screaming all day and love it!” Nope. I don’t say such shit. Because different strokes and all that. There’s a reason people that formerly didn’t care much for Vampire Weekend are coming out in droves for this album. It’s because a ton of what they do on here is more in line with what they like. And therefore less in line with what some others like. And that’s ok. Go on your merry way enjoying this album. And I’ll go on mine not giving a shit about it. And all of that is perfectly fine. I love this band damn near as much as any band in history. And the fact that this album is being met with a less enthusiastic critical reception than any of their past albums doesn’t have to be a telling thing. Maybe it’s great. I don’t know and I don’t care. But clearly SOME of us don’t care for it. Quit telling us we are “wrong”

I mean, I feel like it’s a legitimate criticism to say that he doesn’t want to listen to music that could soundtrack somebody’s yacht party. Now, I can’t say that the album sounds like that, but from the singles, I’d actually agree: there was a subtle darkness to s/t and contra that became not-so-subtle in MVotC that balances out some of the excess sunshine, and that missing counterpoint is what turns me off about the new tunes.

OK, will go listen to the album now.

VW is not what I would call “perfect” for any listener. Many people are annoyed by their cutesiness and their cultural pilfering, neither of which is something anybody would ever say about Coldplay. I’m also not sure how you can claim that VW is neither major nor influential (I agree with you about mythical). I mean, sure, they may never end up in Tom’s column, but as far as indie goes, they’re as big as it gets.

This sounds corny. But it’s all about saving the album. I see a future in which nobody will have the attention span to sit through an entire album. It’s going to be all singles.

FOTB has that same magic of validating those fears & anxieties that evolved as i got older. i don’t really know how to comment on their new sound, but listening to FOTB really did make me feel like we’re on this journey together, and for that alone, it’ll get that quiet nod from me.

Year ago when one of the Beach House albums leaked (I think it was Bloom) all the SG commentors were drooling over it and Joe Howse became a SG comment legend by refusing to listen to the leak until the album was released officially. As I remember it, we briefly renamed the band Beach Howse in his honor.

Maybe! Joe Howse was a commenter here best known for loving Beach House and for adamantly refusing to listen to any sort of leak or advance single, I think during the Bloom rollout. TBH, it all happened so long ago that we’re probably due for a Tracking Down Joe Howse article any day now.

For once I agree with the review on The Other Site (and by that I mean the actual review, not the score) in that there’s something lacking here that made them good in the first place and culminating in Modern Vampires that is still one the better Indie Rock records of the decade. New album has a couple of gems like This Life and Unbearably White but it’s overlong, frontloaded (Sympathy is perhaps the only reason to listen beyond the midway point), incoherent and a bit superficial both lyrically and musicwise. Stereogum is pushing really hard to make us believe this is exactly what their 30something readership (of which I’m part of) wants and needs: something seemingly challenging that actually isn’t and could as well fit in a car commercial because 30 somethings have other priorities than listening to music that needs multiple listens to get it rite? And that’s kind of a shame and I think especially in these troubling times we could use something better than this overlong round of manufactured fun being championed as music of a generation. Thankfully there was that other release today that was album of the week on this site and had all the depth the new VW is lacking so all hail Stereogum!

The one thing that stuck out to me the most is the really shitty beginning/end to songs. Just horrible producing in regard to that. Zero flow to this record.

I really like a lot of the songs though and I feel that they’ll grow on me with repeat listens. Closer to Contra though (my least favorite of theirs) than the other two imo

Not a bad thing, just a shinsy observation.

And during “Sympathy” it’s “Amelia’s face hides being the mask/sweatin’ on the TV factory line.” Either that or just yell “Bamboleo!”

My first thought is that a few songs seem overproduced, with glitch effects and overdone drop-outs/drop-ins, and that the closer was weak. Danielle Haim’s voice is nice and maybe I should check out her band.

Underrated jarring: When an album has such a classic song, it overwhelms the rest of the album. Instead of hearing the next song, you hit repeat instead. Take Phoenix’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”, for example. After “1901”, the rest of the album feels like a let-down. I actually prefer “Ti Amo” and “Bankrupt”.
