Yeah, the country songs made me feel like I was listening to the soundtrack of a made-for-TV musical or something. Not feeling it.

I mean, I feel like it’s a legitimate criticism to say that he doesn’t want to listen to music that could soundtrack somebody’s yacht party. Now, I can’t say that the album sounds like that, but from the singles, I’d actually agree: there was a subtle darkness to s/t and contra that became not-so-subtle in MVotC that balances out some of the excess sunshine, and that missing counterpoint is what turns me off about the new tunes.

OK, will go listen to the album now.

VW is not what I would call “perfect” for any listener. Many people are annoyed by their cutesiness and their cultural pilfering, neither of which is something anybody would ever say about Coldplay. I’m also not sure how you can claim that VW is neither major nor influential (I agree with you about mythical). I mean, sure, they may never end up in Tom’s column, but as far as indie goes, they’re as big as it gets.

This sounds corny. But it’s all about saving the album. I see a future in which nobody will have the attention span to sit through an entire album. It’s going to be all singles.

Year ago when one of the Beach House albums leaked (I think it was Bloom) all the SG commentors were drooling over it and Joe Howse became a SG comment legend by refusing to listen to the leak until the album was released officially. As I remember it, we briefly renamed the band Beach Howse in his honor.

Maybe! Joe Howse was a commenter here best known for loving Beach House and for adamantly refusing to listen to any sort of leak or advance single, I think during the Bloom rollout. TBH, it all happened so long ago that we’re probably due for a Tracking Down Joe Howse article any day now.

I want you to remember that there was a moment in life when you referred to a Vampire Weekend album as “impressively multi-cultural”.

If you aren’t experiencing joy/excitement on first listen on a couple of records every once in a while, what’re you even doing? That’s like the whole point, right?!?!?

The one thing that stuck out to me the most is the really shitty beginning/end to songs. Just horrible producing in regard to that. Zero flow to this record.

I really like a lot of the songs though and I feel that they’ll grow on me with repeat listens. Closer to Contra though (my least favorite of theirs) than the other two imo

And during “Sympathy” it’s “Amelia’s face hides being the mask/sweatin’ on the TV factory line.” Either that or just yell “Bamboleo!”

That, but I think what I love the most is how you think that the song is over like three times before it actually stops.

The cover is perfect. The orange stripe is the icing on the cake.

Underrated jarring: When an album has such a classic song, it overwhelms the rest of the album. Instead of hearing the next song, you hit repeat instead. Take Phoenix’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”, for example. After “1901”, the rest of the album feels like a let-down. I actually prefer “Ti Amo” and “Bankrupt”.

I had to google Joe Howse. Is this the same Joe Howse who writes on his Twitter page: “I am a computer programmer, a calling I inherited from my late brother. I also love the otherworlds of art, history, literature, history, games, and meditative cats.”

I think people just jumped the gun with the aesthetic change and got scared before they’d heard the album in full.

It’s a great cover. Looks like the music sounds.
