What’s weird is she makes this comment in relation to being forced to play shows with the Mothers of Invention, the only band to hate hippies more than the VU.

With that said, I watched it on a big fuckoff massive screen at the London Film Festival and it was brilliant. Something about hearing those first bass strokes breaking out into the shimmer of All Tomorrow’s Parties on theatre speakers, while archive footage of New York and of the band members plays in front of you with film grain the size of your fists plays up on the screen, really makes the outlay on cinema tickets worth it. Through their recordings, through Reed and Nico’s vocal styles, through Cale’s experience of experimental music, through Warhol’s production theme, and even through the quality of footage that Haynes uses, there’s an implicit theme of the noise being just as meaningful as the signal. This film really succeeds at accentuating that.

I thought I’d heard that she’d apologized for her tea party time so it’s sad to hear that she actually went even further in. I love the Velvets regardless but it definitely adds a bit of an asterisk to the way I think about them.

If you look at her public Facebook page, she’s pretty much gone full Qanon. Pretty sad, I still think she’s one of the greatest rock drummers. Her work on Lou Reed’s New York album, especially on “Dime Store Mystery” is incredible.

Yes, Another View is not as good as VU, but it does contain a version of “Ride into the Sun” that seems to have formed the basis of the Cowboy Junkies’ version of “Sweet Jane”, so that makes it alright by me.

For me, though, “1969: VU Live” and “The Quine Tapes” are where it’s at, especially the latter, with three radically different and very long takes on “Sister Ray”. VU was probably the best live rock ‘n roll band in the US at the time. There’s tons of great bootlegs on YouTube as well, especially late ’68/early ’69 sets at The Boston Tea Party. Lou and Co. were not folks with whom I’d like to have hung out, though – too many drugs and bad vibes, and the whole Warhol Factory scene (and all the hangers-on it attracted) is so unappealing. Anyway, for a deep dive into VU’s world, “Uptight: The Velvet Underground Story” and “All Yesterday’s Parties: The Velvet Underground in Print, 1966-1971” are great books to check out (Sterling Morrison was funny as hell).

That’s the album they were touring! Massively hyped at the time. The evening was billed as a “low-fi” event. And then GBV as headliners – I had Bee Thousand and maybe Vampire on Titus but had zero expectations for them live. Was thinking reserved record-store clerks and then Bob just owned the crowd as he drank about 40 bottles of beer and went full Roger Daltrey, Strapping Fieldhands were probably record store clerks.

The Grifters! Now there’s a band you don’t hear much about these days, despite all the 90s nostalgia. Of their albums, I loved Crappin’ You Negative the most, which must have been around the time you saw them.

The first four albums are fantastic in their own different way. The first for establishing the sound most people associate with the band (“I’ll be Your Mirror”, “All Tomorrow’s Parties”) along with the image/mythology (“I’m Waiting for the Man”, “Heroin”); the second for pushing their sound as far into the red as it would go (“White Light/White Heat”, “Sister Ray”; the third for combining mellow, beautiful songs (“Candy Says”, “Pale Blue Eyes”) with more classic VU chug (“What Goes On”, “Beginning to See the Light”). The fourth has “Sweet Jane”, ’nuff said. It was the Cowboy Junkies version of that song back in 1988 that first introduced me to VU, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Loaded. On any given day, depending on my mood, any one of these albums could be my favorite. And don’t forget VU, the “great lost album” released in 1985, which probably had as much an influence on indie bands at the time it was released as the original run of albums.

I’d say all of the 4 canonical records are fairly influential depending on what people were drawn to. The first one is biggest with the moody kids who went on to do 4AD and dream pop, 2nd for the Sonic Youth/No-wavers, 3rd for the more indie guitar types of the past couple decades, 4th for classic rock-leaning bands. Those are complete over-generalizations of course, certainly there’s a bit of twee indie guitar friendly stuff on …& Nico (“Sunday Morning” for example), but seems to be the general way it’s worked out

That’s awesome! Yeah, not to get all TNOCS, but the 40 Watt saved my life back then. Took a Greyhound from Twin Cities to Athens with all my stuff in a single bag. Didn’t know a soul there when I started my grad program. Had a little stipend from the school and spent it each month on shows there. Grifters/GBV/Strapping Fieldhands fall of 94. Wilco/Jayhawks summer ’95. Vic Chesnutt multiple times. Krtistin Hersh with candle light and everyone sitting on the floor. Think the shows ranged from $8-12.

Yes! People seems to do this very regularly — stream HBO Max for a month or two and catch up on their programming, then switch to Netflix or Hulu and do the same, etc.

I haven’t tried Apple TV, but it looks like they have a 7-day free trial, then it’s $5/month after that. Chris is correct that it’s cheaper than going to the movies. The arthouse near me is charging $12/ticket to see this Velvets movie this weekend.

I’ve never been to a movie by myself, but with the wife and kid out of town this weekend I may just check this one out since the college football lineup is weak tea on Saturday . . .

They work up some monstrous raves and the intimacy of the small venue suits them perfectly. It’s a better album than even the near-contemporaneous Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal with Lou Reed solo doing Velvets material.

Walking back to my apt one afternoon, the doors there were wide open to the sunlight and I heard a band starting up. A 40 Watt employee recognized me from previous shows and waved me over- we stood there together as Moe Tucker, with Sterling Morrison in her band, knocked out some ramshackle but beautiful Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry covers for a sound check. Or at least parts of them. The sound was kinda Alex Chilton circa Like Flies on Sherbert and it was just glorious. And it was only the two of watching as folks walked past on the street! Still seems like a dream.

Her politics aren’t really explored, but there are lots of images of the band dressed entirely in black and looking very cranky in California in 1967. Mary Woronov also talks about their contempt for hippies.
