Hmm… curious, as you’ve clearly seen this, but one has to wonder why it is Annie and Carrie set out to make a film explicitly about how much they hate their fame. I was expecting a (kinda, sorta) goofy/weird tour/performance/whatever film, as that’s how each has been promoting it. Bummed that’s not the case and instead it’s just 90 minutes of the two of them bemoaning their fame or lack thereof. I’d have gone with the film their promoting, it seems far less self-serious and mopey. That’s just me. Thank goodness you saw it so the rest of us won’t have to waste our time though.

I have a little OCD. I’m patiently hoping that “Lost Highway” will be added to the Criterion Collection. I’m a little surprised that “Fire Walk With Me” made it. That’s the film uber-David Lynch fans insist is his best work. But you’ve piqued my interest, and will stream “Lost Highway” later tonight.

In Lost Highway Bill Pullman’s character is a real person who murdered his wife. the next two thirds of the movie is his dream dealing with the guilt before he’s finally given the electric chair.

It’s going to be like everything else St. Vincent does which is that everyone here will pre-emptively freak out about how cringey/insufferable/tryhard it is, and then it will probably be, at worst, decent.

I can buy “fascinating, if flawed” but for a satire I just didn’t think Vox Lux had much to say about its themes: violence, celebrity, music, any of it. I thought the first half was decent, but I really disliked the second half. Natalie Portman’s performance was really over the top and didn’t feel grounded in anything human or connected to the character from the first half of the movie. It just felt so cynical and dismissive of its subject matter.

A semester prior, I was at community college. The instructor, who used to have a writing credit for “Baraka”, showed us “Vertigo”. Some idiot in the back row half-yelled: “Who da lady?” when Jimmy Stewart sees Kim Novak for the first time after thinking she was dead.

Oh, wait. That was me.

I can explain “Mulholland Drive”, sort of. The term “dream logic” better applies to “Lost Highway” because I don’t really have a clue as to what’s going on. My favorite scene in “The Squid and the Whale” was when he tags along with his son and girlfriend on movie night. Baumbach picked the right scene from “Blue Velvet”.

Does Brownstein burn down a school in this after they dump a bucket of pigs’ blood on her head?

Amazing and sort of relatable. I wrote a college paper analyzing Blue Velvet based on Aristotle’s Poetics. It’s been my favorite movie ever since.

I hope to use: “WHO ARE YOU? A BUNCH OF PURITANS?” the next time I subject someone to a Lynch film.

I’m hoping there will be another standalone concert film. Apparently Bobcat Goldthwait of all people filmed a bunch of shows on that tour. He’s a credited producer on this movie so maybe the footage just ended up here but I’ve always been of the mindset that if it was recorded, it might as well be released!

It was ingrained in my mind not to like or dislike a movie. Summer film studies class at my alma mater, professor stands at the lectern, slams down a stack of papers, and roars: “I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS MOVIE! (It was “Blue Velvet”) WHO ARE YOU? A BUNCH OF PURITANS? GET OUT OF THIS AUDITORIUM IF YOU EVER USE THE WORD “I” AGAIN!” First graded paper I ever got was a F–. Some students got ten-plus minuses.

For my purposes, “Vox Lux” is a perfect film. So much going on.

I actually really liked Vox Lux when it first came out and have always been curious as to whether the tides will turn in its favor one of these days. But I’ve also been too scared to revisit it in case it doesn’t hold up to what I thought was a pretty fascinating, if flawed, movie.

I don’t want to come across as a contrarian for contrarian’s sake. I want to always remain in good standing with the commentariat. But I wrote a formal paper on “Vox Lux”. My academic advisor, like always, kind of shrugged, and said: “I guess it makes sense.” I posited “Vox Lux” as a retelling of the Robert Johnson myth. If you rewatch it, listen to what Raffey Cassidy tells her sister in the bedroom. It’s a small piece of dialogue. Then cut to the church scene, in which Cassidy sings “Wrapped Around”. Then ask yourself, who is she singing to? Sorry. Please don’t downvote me.

Andy Samberg just crushes it in this movie. His monologue toward the end where he apologizes is just so, so good.

I don’t like calling things “pretentious”, but Vox Lux was one of the most pretentious movies I’ve ever seen.

i read anthony lane’s review of it last night, and he said it was funny, while not being particularly good at what it’s actually trying to do. but I’d see it based on just that, he’s not someone to give undue credit for funny-ness…
