Writing about music is a strange act already, no? Now, imagine filming a movie about writing about music. Now, this film may have a “soundtrack” of sorts to stream (basically a playlist):

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5lT2mchE7Q13RxgtItI3mZ

Now we can listen to the music from the movie about a person writing about music. Perhaps Caitlin Moran can write an essay about he music from the music about her own life and how she wrote about music. Maybe they can make a movie from her essay. One can dream.

I’m just rambling here. I think I’m bitter because Almost Famous and How to Build a Girl aren’t movies about a young person’s journey yadda yadda yadda, but really about a healthy publishing industry where writers could get paid for their work and not promised the unholy grail, the big capital e, the dreaded “Exposure.”

When Emma Thompson says, “This we would like to run in the next issue,” I think, “‘issues?'””‘run?'” followed closely by, “she’s probably going to get real paid with real money.” It’s like being the last of the cowboys and watching a western and thinking, “God, they used to walk around with six-shooters and not get ‘politely asked’ to leave Barnes and Noble.”

Besides that, it looks like a competent film, the kind of thing you’d find in a cheap DVD rack ten plus years ago alongside other sweet little indie comedies starring your favorite white folk. Maybe something with a Noah Baumbach production credit. Not top-tier Wes Anderson joints, but lower B-grade stuff, the Great Value brand for independent cinema. Similar taste, but obviously imitative of some far greater thing.

In all honestly, I most likely will not watch How to Build a Girl. However, I’m sure Caitlin Moran will, so at least it’ll find its audience.

See, that’s why I emphasized the “from what I can tell” in my comment. I would be happy to be proven wrong, but nothing indicates that I should make the time to see it.

Whoah–you actually read the book and saw the film BEFORE you commented? You’re at the wrong site.

I didnt feel anything at all watching the movie, which sucks because the book was really such a delight to read and felt like it made much more sense. and I wish they would have stayed more closely to the original story. Also, while HtBaG is great, HtBF is a lot better. Johanna is older and living on her own and this point has been friends with John for years, and begins to actually make friends who are women. Also, there is so much more about THE MUSIC in the books and especially female led bands. Ugh. I was disappointed to say the least.

I don’t know what it is but i am not an Ann Powers fan. I often agree with her taste but the way she says things makes me want to punch a stuffed animal.

Theon as a character in the series is such a mindfuck to process. Alfie had his work cut (ha?) out for him from the jump.

This movie looks bad and booksmart was not good. Couldn’t they cast a British actor instead of Jonah Hills little sister.?

I’m watching Game of Thrones for the first time and somehow have avoided literally all the spoilers over the last decade, and man, they went some wrenching places with that dipshit character.

This looks like it could be cute. Might be a fun watch on a night when I don’t want something too heavy. It’s not like I’m going anywhere else lately, and I do find the magic realism of the talking celebrity photos charming.

It’s all a matter of taste of course but I found Lady Bird to be terribly overrated. That whole ‘lesson’ of the outcast girl in suburbia who gets caught up trying to be accepted by the cool/rich kids only to remember who her ‘real friend’ is basically felt to me like it was a Pretty in Pink homage without being as good as Pretty in Pink.

I mean…. yeah. It’s why virtually every newspaper or magazine interview with a woman in entertainment now features a section in the middle where they’re asked at length about social media trolls.
