Think of it like food. There’s a lot of different cuisines, you don’t have to like the extremes of each but you can like each individually, or even some mixed together.
Some people obsess over one type of cuisine and the culture surrounding it.

But beyond that this interpretation is so edgy it hurts lol. It comes from a purest mindset.
Hilarious when a simplistic childs movie gets this kind of attention.

I for one really liked the hip-hop/funk song commentary on how pop was stealing everybody else’s stuff, And everybody else got pissed off about it. And I personally know people who have the same attitude as Poppy when it comes to attitudes about country music. Everyone spouts off about how they sing about their wife taking their truck and their dog and leaving.
Those tropes have been around for a very long time.
Rock has always had disdain for Pop. How is that in accurate?

I for one have been plowing through Criterion more than any of the other streaming services lately, ADMIRE ME.

Also if y’all are looking for a good watch on there, check out “Diva” before it leaves at the end of the month.

That’s when rock was considered a force of freedom and rebellion against the establishment. Now rock is the establishment and is considered a force of reactionaryism.

I have a nine-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. We’ll probably watch this at some point.

I need to mix-up my son’s viewing habits, though. He’s been watching nothing but movies where the dad dies or is dead (Lion King, Star Wars, Onward). He’s started telling me that his stuffed animals are sad because their daddy “didn’t make it”.

Hopefully no troll dads die in this.

Thankfully most children’s entertainment has improved and in some ways is the best it’s ever been, so while my kids love this shit, they also love stuff like Pixar (and Disney’s better offerings) and Ghibli and GKIDS. Even Netflix kids shows like “Storybots” offer surprisingly entertaining, legitimately educational material.

But my favourite movie was—genuinely—Mac and Me. Children unfortunately enjoy watching garbage, but I do wish children were better respected and didn’t get the chance to watch so much shit solely made with the purpose of hawking a toy line (or a fast food restaurant). Looking back, a lot of Mac and Me is fucking hilarious to me now for reasons I did not see at the time, so there is a kind of enjoyment in how shoddily made it was and how I managed to see through that to what I felt was an exciting story underneath. But these days, the garbage isn’t so shoddily made. So I do wonder if the children of today will grow up and be able to see past the big-budget sheen of the utter rubbish they enjoyed.

The first movie was not terrible. Even the Netflix show is dumb fun.

So the target audience is very excited for it and kids at this age are really finding out what they like and dislike and what their friends like and dislike. I get it’s dumb and easy to be cynical about it and it’s certainly not Inside Out, but for an 8 year old, it’s probably at a level she can handle.

What really blew me away is at her orthodontist appointment a couple of months ago, Pre-COVID Era, the assistant was telling her friend (both young and childless) how great the Trolls movie was.

Back in like 2009 I asked my younger cousin (about 10 years younger than me) what kind of music he liked. He replied that he liked all kinds of music and then showed me that he meant the top iTunes songs. He literally only listened to what everyone else listened to without any discernment. An overly charitable interpretation would say that he was just open to all sounds, but the top iTunes charts in 2009 were extremely homogeneous and his listening habits clearly had nothing to do with personal taste…
