And the North American tour of QUEEN + Adam Lambert is SOLD OUT. I think a lot of the BR allure is that Freddie is dead and a legend. With Sir Elton still being with us and touring, we can go see him. I will go to see Rocketman as I’m a fan of EJ. But I’m a bigger fan of QAL and can’t wait to enjoy the concert in the front row.
]]>Very good point.
]]>No, I get what you’re saying. And with my 50th fast approaching, I find myself less willing to settle for just ok. I was trying to listen to some new Bandcamp discovery the other day and for the first time I had this thought – I only have so many more years of listening to things I truly love and that destroy me. So I switched over to the new Charly Bliss.
]]>I will never not smile when people mistake Walk the Line with Walk Hard. Not once!
]]>It’s gonna be weird years from now when indie rock bands start getting the biopic treatment and they all start with them living comfortable uppercrust NYC childhoods with their art dealer parents.
]]>‘Bullshit by Tom’ Should be the title.
]]>This just reminded me of the sketch from “I Think You Should Leave” that parodies the scene in Walk the Line where Cash plays “Folsom Prison Blues” for the record producer.
]]>While Adventure Time is silly and playful, I’d also argue that it was pretty heavy, too.
Goddamn, I love that show.
]]>Right! And Waits should be a totally-unreliable narrator. I’d be way more interested in a bullshitted-by-Tom life story that his actual life story.
]]>Netflix seems to be on the path to making all entertainment 6.5-7/10 forever.
]]>I’m Not There made a huge impression on me. What an incredible film and interesting way of exploring someone.
]]>The soundtrack work that Atticus Ross did collaging Beach Boys sounds and dialogue with ambient noise into a destabilizing force allowing the viewer (and listener) to feel the states Brian was in is nothing short of genius.
]]>Sure there are things in between but we don’t need them. I cannot speak to your specific references, but good art does not have to be exhausting or heavy. Sometimes the best art is playful and/or silly. Tierra Whack and Lizzo (esp early Lizzo) come to mind. Kimmy Schmidt, Adventure Time, too.
]]>Sam Rockwell needs to play Tom Waits. The World depends on this…. something Like American Splendour, where Waits is in it himself, watching on
]]>Blaze (about Blaze Foley), which came out last year, was another good recent one.
]]>“Get Out”
“That f****’ destroyed my world,” is apropos. That was something new. And more amazingly, it was made by a major studio and went into wide release and made money. Jordan Peele is a unicorn. He is not the new Spike Lee. He is the new Quentin Tarantino.
]]>A great exception indeed. When it was announced the Paul Dano casting choice seemed perfect but John Cosack seemed off. Was I ever wrong, JC’s portrayal moved me to tears, favourite performance that year. Fresh take on bio movie narrative and everything about it worked. Too bad it wasn’t the film that made a billion dollars.
]]>Love & Mercy is definitely an exception. It is artful in a way few (if any) other biopics could dream of being.
]]>Todd Haynes David Bowie biopic was also great. Very flawed but I loved it. He should make one more music movie…make it a trilogy.
]]>Great choice. I’m not there was a fresh take on a biopic that was underrated because people where confused by it not following the Walk Hard template. Which came out at the same time if I remember correctly. 2007 was supposed to be the end of the traditional biopic.
]]>Oh man Love & Mercy really hit me hard. Even though I knew the story going in I was bawling by the end. But I’m a huge Brian Wilson fan so I even watched that old ABC Saturday Night movie from the early 2000s.
Walk Hard doesn’t get the love it deserves! When are they gonna make “Walk Harder”?
]]>I like the part where they spontaneously create a classic song in one take.
]]>Touche’ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is at least the 3rd time someone has dredged up my old post that I have since apologized for profusely!!!
]]>Have you seen The Goldfinch trailer?? Takes Perfume Genius the next level. He’s turning into quite the cinematic darling for directors.
]]>“CRJ is just boring and nondescript electro pop. It doesn’t suck. It’s just uhhhhhh…..nothing” – blochead
]]>Oh yeah…of course. And I’m sure I’m phrasing all of this poorly. It just seems like more and more we’re being fed this kind of mediocrity and expecting to accept it as capital A ART. And they are sliding this shit past the goalie. That piece of shit Queen thing won an Oscar (and I’m not claiming that’s the end all be all of critical analysis) I dunno..it just seems like mediocrity is the new good. Honestly could just be me.
]]>Also a side note: the use of Perfume Genius’s “Slip Away” in “Booksmart” is a perfect match of images and music.
]]>Malek is, of course, a mannerist parody of a human being, so there’s no way his performance wouldn’t have been at least slightly ludicrous.
]]>But sometimes there’s a necessary in-between, right? If every song blew out my heart like “Tallulah” or every movie had me gasping for breath like “Snowpiercer” I’d be exhausted. My wife and students convinced me to finally watch “Crazy Rich Asians.” Is it full of transcendence and lasting images? Not really. Enjoyable and sometimes surprising? Definitely.
]]>A straight-up biopic of Dylan would be awful. I’m Not There was perfect for someone like him. I love that movie, too.
I’d like to see someone do something similar for Tom Waits.
]]>I’m that weirdo who likes Ray. It left us stuck with Jamie Foxx though, so that part is a bummer.
]]>Not only that but it also increases sales for said musician’s catalog. Queen has benefited greatly since the movie came out.
]]>*points to the box office for a lot of these films*
]]>I hope there’s a part where someone yells at Elton, “You never paid for drugs. Not once!”
]]>
