I don’t normally watch a lot of Danish TV but I’m in the hospital this week and the cheesy German and English detective shows playing in the lounge have been subbed.

Does Danish TV still dub English language programming into Danish, or does it use subtitles? The practice of subbing rather than dubbing is widely credited for the generally high English skills of Swedes and Dutch: one of the most important things one can do to learn a language is simply to hear it, which one obviously cannot do in a dubbed presentation.

I guess the Danes don’t get enough practice writing formal, i.e. academic, English – which is different from colloquially spoken English.

I have a friend, who admittedly is a fucking genius, who has taught herself to read and write about 10 other languages. She can’t speak any of ’em for shit; luckily, two of those are Latin and Ancient Greek, so it’s not like she’d have many opportunities to practice.

That’s fascinating considering that it’s generally a lot easier for Anglophone adults to read and write other languages than to speak them.

It’s not a difficult thing to make sense of: life is overwhelming and people want to turn off their brains in the evening.

I echo those same thoughts, ShadowMorpheus. I am under the belief, and have been since Idol first aired that the networks are desperate for non-scripted shows. Cheaper to produce, albeit the judges make an insane amount of money in general. I get that.

What I am saying is…is there any pure value after watching such trash as this and what The Masked Singer did initially? My guess is that they will end up getting third or fourth place in the ratings. The fate of Alter Ego, check back in January or May.

And once the shows have their initial airing, it will end up in streaming and social media will impatiently wait for the next episode to be critical of the judges (i.e. The Voice, American Idol, etc.)

I teach (in English) at a Danish univerity and some of my students speak such good English I sometimes think they’re native speakers. Their written English is much poorer though.

Not if they have anything to do with the songwriting, publishing or a good percentage of touring and merch income. Please don’t pretend like nearly anyone who has a hit single isn’t able to turn that into enough money to at least live life the same as the guy working on spreadsheets. That’s a ridiculous notion. One hit wonders can still tour that one hit in clubs for decades.

Not the same. Those are still real people standing on stage in front of an audience singing and playing music.

We used to have much faster trains before the late ’40s, when a horrific accident led to the imposition of a 79 mph speed limit on all tracks that aren’t exclusive to passenger service. Freight rail has always been a much more profitable venture in the US than in Europe for a variety of reasons, so needless to say railroads weren’t eager to make any of their lines passenger-only; at a stroke passenger rail became significantly less competitive with private cars and even buses. Passenger rail was basically dead in the US long before air travel got cheap enough be competitive, whereas European countries continually improved their passenger rail service for decades after WWII, and car ownership rates were much lower (also for a variety of reasons) so there was a much bigger ridership base for high speed systems when they were built out.

I think the reason it sounds off is that their lyrics usually don’t sound like they were written by idiomatic speakers. You can hear the improvement in even Jens Lekman’s lyrics after his stint living in Australia and speaking English 24/7.
