Yes, it was a bit Johnny Cash-centric but he was a lighthouse for a lot of fans and musicians. I was surprised at the glossing over of Barbara Mandrell and Kenny Rogers. But as a former residuals payment coordinator for TV commercials – I’m guessing either their labels didn’t agree to having them in there or they didn’t want to be in there. I don’t know if the artists/estates we saw were paid or not. I’m guessing they were. Rogers may just have asked for too much money.

Tyler’s podcast is so well done and researched. I listend to all of the episodes back to back in about a week. I know it may be a while for another season but I hope we get another!

He’s only considered a one hit wonder as a crossover artist. He’s had numerous country chart hits in 3 decades. I think that qualifies him as having some sort of elevated status in the industry.

Like the article author said, no documentary, even at 16 hours, is going to be able to adequately cover everything and Burns had to have a cutoff point. Dude’s been working on this for years and there’s a century of history in this genre to cover. This doc isn’t going to please everybody. I wouldn’t call it a “failure”.

Anybody who doesn’t agree that “Old Town Road” is up there with “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” or that Billy Ray shouldn’t be up on the Mount Rushmore of country music will be downvoted to oblivion here. This whole “Old Town Road” thing has been one big gaslighting mind fuck since day one.

Make a Country Music part two or something, Burns. The landscape of country music, as you’ve pointed out, has been irrevocably changed after 9/11.

I also hate the mass gaslighting regarding Bill Ray, with so many websites including this one saying that he’s Country royalty… dude was a one hit wonder whose big hit is often considered to be one of the worst songs ever.

How about mentioning Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and the rest of the Highwomen supergroup, and even Kasey Musgraves being the 2019 Grammy Award winning artist–that is, if and only if an additional hour or two is added down the road (more than likely, it would appear on DVD and Blu-Ray.)

And just FYI–the Baseball series added a Tenth Inning to focus on the steroid issues of the 1990’s to the Boston Red Sox ending their 86 year curse winning it all in 2004.

Been looking forward to this series for a while. Sad to hear about so many omissions (the history of the steel guitar seems like the most egregious), but thanks for mentioning them.

However, I will go to my grave never understanding how or why anybody ever considered “Old Town Road” to be a country song, and I’m highly doubtful this song has steered anybody toward country music. Like, “damn, I really like ‘Old Town Road’, let me dive right into this stack of George Strait albums.” Never happened. Not gonna happen.

I’ll take Ken Burns zooming in on a photo anyday over History Channel style ‘documentaries’ featuring off-off Broadway level actors doing reenactments.

When I first heard about it, I was sure it would either take the safe route and end decades ago and or end with the triumph of GOLDEN HOUR and “Old Town Road” (which have raised interest in country music among audiences who never cared much about it.) Given that Ken “how many times can I zoom into a photo?” Burns directed it, no surprise that it went the former direction.

But, other than that, right on about the omissions.

In fact, I’d kill for Judge to mimic Burns and produce a 16 hour doc ‘Tales…’ style.

YFBS is more rant than research. At least part of the whole C&R thing is that you can donate or buy research materials for him. I haven’t listened to everything he has up, but I thought the 3-hours worth of Buck Owens’ story was pretty damn good.
