Got to get them sweet page clicks though. I guess bitching about the Grammys must be relatively lucrative… the Recommended For You section is somehow entirely full of recent stories related to Music’s Biggest Garbage Night, including not ONE, but TWO “Best of” articles about the Grammys. o_O
And that’s just in the Recommended For You section alone… O_o

Also….her jellied mustard ring is on my table for all Holiday dinners. Basically it’s Gray Poupon with just a kiss of sea salt mixed with plain gelatin and made in a small copper ribbed ring. Served on a small serving dish. A small dab of it on quality Virginia ham is a truly sublime WASP moment. Don’t even get me started on her Indian Curried Pearl Onions…………………

Yeah. It’s really a shame. These new age WASPs (like my beloved mother) can’t hold a candle to the late 1950’s-60’s WASPs. My grandmother was epic. I have never met, nor will I EVER meet, another human being that knew THE RULES like that woman. It was simply amazing. And on some level kinda comforting. The one thing that I think that gets overlooked in the bashing of WASPs is just how much work it takes to gain all that knowledge and then how much effort it takes to make everything seem effortless. When you show up at a WASPs house for Thanksgiving and she never looks even the slightest bit flustered by the inherent stress of the situation please know days, nay weeks, have gone into the prep for that 4-5 hour family event. I marvel at it when it’s done juuuuuuuuuust right.

And yet your mother married a Greek? But…but…they’re so ethnic!

(This is essentially what my über-WASP paternal grandmother, a proud daughter of Augusta, Georgia, said on learning that my father was marrying my ethnic-Greek mother.)

I am aware of Martha’s background. But for all intent and purpose she is the queen of the WASPs, despite her not WASP background. I might argue that my mother is a much better WASP than Martha. First things first my mother has the Upstate New York upbringing such a title should require. AND my mother would never do anything as tawdry as star in a TV show explaining/showing how to be a proper WASP. She would say “These are societal norms that are taught to young women. I fear if you are watching a TELEVISION program to learn how to do basic WASP activities I fear it’s far too late for you” which, of course, is the perfect WASP stance on the topic.

FWIW Martha Stewart’s WASP identity is a construct–she’s actually an ethnic Pole (maiden name Kostyra) and she grew up in a dumpy working-class town next to Newark. She was an incredibly hot model in the ’60s, married an investment banker named Stewart (this was back before Jews broke down the doors of high finance and let Indians come in behind them), and moved to the traditionally über-WASP suburbs in Westchester County (think: Don and Betty Draper’s place in Ossining). From there, she developed an identity as the ultimate WASP homemaker, and monetized the bejeezus out of it. It’s the same way that Ralph Lifshitz, a Bronx Jew, became Ralph Lauren, selling his super-preppy “stories.”

Tay-Tay is the ultimate stick-up-her-ass WASP, though, you’re not wrong about that.

If asked to name my most disliked musical acts I would probably go with Taylor Swift over Kanye. But they would def be #1 and #2. I strongly dislike both people. That being said Kanye had better get out of the business of fucking with TayTay. Kanye lives his life in a more or less “stream of thought” manner. I’m not saying that’s a good thing or a bad thing. And there’s no racial connotation there. He just strikes me as a true artist in that his mind operates in a very chaotic way. This creative way of thinking is what gives him his incredible, and singular, artistic gift. Taylor is the exact opposite. Everything she does is calculated and premeditated. I grew up around WASP’s like Taylor. If any of you are not familiar with the term WASP it stands for “white anglo saxon protestant”. For further reference Martha Stewart might be considered the single best example of a WASP. So when Kanye picks these battles with Taylor he is always going to get his ass handed to him. Oh he might get in that first punch cuz Taylor isn’t ready. But after the first blow, she’ll invariably regroup, get with her counsel, and lay him to waste. As she did last night.
Again, I genuinely don’t give a shit about this stupid little war they have going. But if any of you think Kanye is going to beat Taylor in a battle of attrition you are so wrong.

It’s almost sickening to me to see all these deserving artists get pushed onto back-burners because they are trying new things. Although I don’t necessarily have a huge problem with those who win, I think it’d be nice to see some variation.

I dunno man, the “jazz is dead” thing has been pretty much like the main conversation among anyone who plays or listens to jazz for the last 40 years. And there are perfectly valid arguments for and against that (the overly standardized Marsalis brother bullshit being for, the vital stuff that TPAB collaborators like Kamasi Washington and Thundercat are doing being the strongest argument against), but it’s hard to argue that overall jazz’s cultural impact isn’t what it was.

But as someone who was a middle-school-band-instrument-playing-glasses-wearing dork, let’s not shit on the kid! I see me up there! Long Beach Unified Honor Band represent!
