It’s undoubtedly a useful thing! Great discoveries! But where the problem comes in is that I know a lot of people who grew up in, like, serious gardening families. Self-sufficiency was the most important thing. Grape and tomato vines, green bean and pea rows, pear trees, etc — who had never tasted a fresh grape, tomato, green bean, or pear until they were adults. Everything they grew got canned. It was a weird obsession. (Growing up in the Mormon milieu I’m sure enhances this vein in my background).

White mid-20th-C American cuisine is, I think, the nadir of the human culinary endeavor. We had just started to figure out how to preserve food for long periods, and we were convinced that we needed to preserve everything and use it. Go a can of cream of mushroom soup? Some frozen potatoes, maybe some meat? How bout some canned olives or green beans or something? maybe some preshredded cheese, too? Just bake that up. It’ll be terrible, but your kids’ll be nostalgic for it when they grow up I guarantee.

I once tried a few of those Pacqui ghost pepper chips and thought I was gonna have to bury my tongue in the cat litter. I’m a wuss anyway when it comes to hawt sauce but good Lord.

Just checked my cupboards and the dropper is moulded into the glass of the bottle, we need to get Snopes on this.

(But not on the mouthwash, I can attest to this as my mum used to work in a pharmacy and I grew up in a sleepy English village that was mainly sleepy because of alcohol and drug usage)

Dexter Holland’s hot sauce has been a thing for a while. Buddy of mine said that Holland gives a couple bottles to all of his employees every year as a Christmas present, which strikes me as not that far off from the way that Soviet state-owned firms would give out leather-bound volumes of Lenin’s essays to the highest-achieving workers in a factory or mine.

This stuff is still going strong! As a white person from the UK I know I don’t have a lot of room to judge anyone else’s cuisine but my first experiences with American potlucks and family gatherings were surprising to say the least. Though I think the most shocking thing was that some of it actually works.

White mid-20th-century American cuisine, anyway, which is where Mormon food is largely stuck. I have seen exactly what you describe on the table at a “Linger Longer” church potluck within the past 15 years–at a Mormon singles ward (i.e., young recent college grads) in West L.A., no less.
