I mean, “Most of the Time” is great. I was under the impression Dylan liked it a lot too, considering the focus he put on Oh Mercy in Chronicles.

There is a crazy “rock” version i just saw recently from the Letterman show circa ’84.
Dylan’s backing band is The Plugz, and i swear it works.

Jokerman has a lyric flow and content that is truly mystical. I could listen to it 10,000 times and never unlock its mysteries. Plus Knopfler and Sly and Robbie play on it. “You’re going to Sodom and Gomorrah But what do you care? Ain’t nobody there would want to marry your sister” is the most prototypical Dylan line ever. And I love the way he spits out the lyrics with such emotion.

Outlaw Blues…He was at the top of his game, on top of the world, unleashing the power of his electric band for the first time. The lyrics weren’t genius, but his vocals are amazing, telling you how much it sucks to be a famous outlaw. “I wish I was on some Australian mountain range.” Chills.

In reply to DevastationWagon. They’re both magnificent, of course, but I think “Murder most foul” has made such an impact because it’s the kind of song that Dylan hasn’t done in a minute. And to have it come on the heels of five LPs of pop standards AND completely out of nowhere AND at the beginning of the pandemic all reinforced its inherent qualities.

Like so many Dylan songs, I usually get turned on to his music by other artists covering one of his songs. One of my favorites is Jerry Garcia Band cover of Tough Mama. That said, my favorite song could likely change daily.

i was never a dylan fan, staunchly so (stupid yes, but it was fun to hold on to my dislike without having given him a fair shake.. at least as far as a massive presence like dylan can not be in one music nerd’s life) so the week rough n rowdy had come out, whether covid boredom or just admiring the idea that this man at nearly 80 just released another album i decided to listen to his entire discography only in reverse chronological order. it was really cool going through his phases backwards. i think i have a different appreciation for his work post-desire than i would have if i had started on his first album.. needless to say i’m now a fan, tho i have a lot of catching up to do.. anywho, i made a mix as i listened to his body of work in reverse, should anyone wanna listen:

I don’t find myself going back to Highway 61 all that much, but it’s the first record that really made me appreciate Dylan’s fever-dream turns of phrase.

“The sun isn’t yellow, it’s chicken” from Tombstone Blues is one of my favorites.
