Florida rapper PlayThatBoiZay has worked a lot with Denzel Curry, and Curry is among the impressive cast of guests that appears on Zay’s new album out today. VIP also boasts appearances from A$AP Rocky, JPEGMAFIA, Kenny Mason, and Mike Dimes. The Curry and Rocky appearances come on “Hoodlumz,” a song you might have already heard on Curry’s King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 this year. As for Zay himself, he errs on the side of amped-up rage rap but can pull off smoother, more agile bars on tracks like “CUT UP.” Explore what the album has to offer below.

Buffalo rap hardhead Benny The Butcher has a truly chaotic discography. Earlier this year, Benny released his Def Jam album Everybody Can’t Go. A couple of weeks ago, Benny and his Black Soprano Family crew released an album called Summertime Butch. Now, Benny has a new EP with three songs, each of which has a big guest star. One of those guest stars is Drake.

Thurston Moore is set to release a new album, Flow Critical Lucidity, in September. We’ve already heard quite a few tracks from the Sonic Youth co-founder’s latest, including “Isadora,” “Hypnogram,” “Rewilding,” and “Sans Limites” featuring Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier. Today, Moore is back with another album preview called “The Diver,” which features lyrics by Radieux Radio, bassist Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine), and percussionist Jem Doulton (Roisin Murphy).

The wildly creative Florida singer and rapper Doechii signed with Top Dawg Entertainment a few years ago, and she scored a hit last year with the Trillville-interpolating Kodak Black collab “What It Is (Block Boy).” Since then, Doechii has released a handful of promising one-off singles like “Booty Drop,” “Pacer,” and “Alter Ego.” (She’s also featured on the new Katy Perry album, but you can’t win them all.) Doechii hasn’t released a larger project since the 2022 EP She / Her / Black Bitch, and people have been wondering when she’d get a chance to drop something larger. It’s finally happening, and we won’t have to wait long.

In July, experimental rock vets Oxbow lost its lead singer right in the middle of a European tour. At the time, frontman and founder Eugene Robinson announced his departure in an ominous Substack post reading: “The very real prospect that we might have contributed to the misery of the world makes me sick to my stomach.” A few days later, guitarist Niko Wenner wrote on Instagram that “an accusation was leveled at me” and that Oxbow “no longer exists.” Now, Robinson is back with the noise-rock supergroup Buñuel, who have announced a double LP titled Mansuetude, coming in October.

Mötley Crüe have announced the Cancelled EP, produced by Bob Rock and arriving in early October. Following their 2019 soundtrack to the biographical film Dirt, not to mention 2021’s 40 Years cassette boxset, Cancelled features the already released, Mick Mars-less “Dogs Of War” and a cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Fight For Your Right,” which Mötley Crüe have performed live in the past.

The Brussels/Marseille band Cœur À L’Index play sparkling guitar-led indie pop, and on new album Adieu Minette they’ll do it for the great UK punk label La Vida Es Un Mus, whose roster tends to skew a lot harder and nastier than this. The label bills the record as a collection of “fragile pop songs for people who love C86 as much as they love power pop and punk, but who also have a soft spot for French Chanson from the 60’s onwards.” “Minette,” the new album’s lead single and quasi title track, lives up to that lofty description. If you were vibing with all those Skandinavian guitar-pop acts of the 2010s like Makthaverskan — or if you’re in the market for a less dreamy, more down-to-earth complement to Alvvays — you’ll probably quite enjoy this too. Maria Jacobson, the Chicago musician who records under the name Fran, released their album Leaving at the top of 2023. Today, they’ve released a really cool new song, a watery waltz called “Florida.”

Bluegrass giant Billy Strings announced a new album Highway Prayers earlier this month. Featuring his longtime band and production by Jon Brion, Highway Prayers includes the lead single “Leadfoot” and a 20-song(!) tracklist. One of those tracks is the double-named “Stratosphere Blues / I Believe In You,” which is out today alongside a music video directed by JJ Horner.

Back in the early-to-mid ’90s, college-rock four-piece Cell were making the rounds and impressing Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, who released a 7-inch on his Ecstatic Peace imprint. Cell only ever released two LPs and several EPs (via the DGC subsidiary of Geffen), such as 1992’s Slo-Blo and 1994’s Living Room, before parting ways in 1995. Today, Cell are back with a new-old song, “Free People,” which was originally written in the ’90s and performed live a few times. Now, “Free People” has been properly recorded and has a music video to match.

After making a big splash this year with “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” Sabrina Carpenter released her anticipated new album Short n’ Sweet today, which turns out to sound a lot more like “Please Please Please” than “Espresso” in general. (I love both songs, but the album’s strong resemblance to Kacey Musgraves is not a bad thing.) Along with the new LP comes a wildly entertaining music video for opening track “Taste.”

This year, the Boston Celtics won their first NBA championship since 2008, pretty much trouncing the Mavericks. Celtics star Jaylen Brown won the Finals MVP, but he wasn’t selected to play for the American Olympic team, and he says that he was passed over because of his longstanding beef with the Nike corporation. Now, he’s out here rapping about it.

In July, Pixies released a single with their new bassist, Emma Richardson. Titled “Chicken,” the release is set to appear on the band’s forthcoming album The Night The Zombies Came, which also features the previously released single “You’re So Impatient” and is out in October. Today, Pixies have shared another cut from the album — the stomping, distortion-heavy “Oyster Beds.”

Back in 2021 we bestowed Album Of The Week honors of Always Something, a garage-rocking, power-popping delight from Gainesville band UV-TV. Today they’re back with news of a new album, and it sounds like quite the departure.

New Radicals, the band responsible for the 1998 alt-pop anthem “You Get What You Give,” broke up shortly after the release of Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too, their sole album. Band mastermind Gregg Alexander disappeared from the public eye, but he kept writing songs for other artists. Alexander has been tentatively coming back to the spotlight over the last decade, partly because of some of those songs that didn’t come out under the New Radicals name and partly because a few political types really, really like “You Get What You Give.”

For what feels like the first time in a while, we’ve finally got some new pop stars really going off this year. One of them is Sabrina Carpenter. Technically, the 25-year-old Carpenter isn’t new. She was a Disney child star, and she’s on her fifth album. But Carpenter has had a series of huge breakout moments this year, releasing the massive hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” The former was a true song of the summer contender — Stereogum readers voted it #2, right behind Kendrick — and the latter debuted at #1. Carpenter already sold out her upcoming arena tour — a real accomplishment in this climate. Now, her much-anticipated album Short N’ Sweet is here. On first listen, this one pays off on the promise of those two songs.

In 2019, Chain Cult shared their debut full-length Shallow Grave. The Greek DIY band have released a bunch of great tunes since then, such as “We’re Not Alone” and “Always A Mess,” and now they’re announcing their sophomore album Harm Reduction.

Earlier this year, Mk.gee released Two Star & The Dream Police, which landed at #8 on our list of the Best Albums Of 2024 So Far. The 26-year-old was praised by Eric Clapton, and he’s about to head out on a world tour. Now, he’s sharing the new song “Lonely Fight.”

Earlier this week, Blink-182 announced an extended version of their latest album One More Time… titled One More Time… Part-2 with eight new songs. Now, the rock miscreants are sharing the singles “All In My Head” and “No Fun.”

In a couple weeks, Prim will unleash their debut album Move Too Slow. So far the melodic alt-rock crew has released “Don’t Count On Me” and “Golden Tooth,” and today they unveiled the seething, grungy banger “Make Your Bed.”

In May, Abstract Crimewave recruited Lykke Li for “The Gambler,” the first single from their forthcoming album The Longest Night. The indie duo formerly known as Smile is back today with “Flyga Fram,” featuring Dungen.

Tomorrow, Illuminati Hotties will share their new album Power. Sarah Tudzin has released the compelling singles “Can’t Be Still,” “Didn’t,” “Power,” and “The L,” and today she’s back with a final taste called “Sleeping In.”

A few years ago, RVG teamed up with Julia Jacklin for a haunting cover of Björk’s “Army Of Me.” Today, the Australian rock band tackled Ramones’ “Pet Sematary” and shared a new song titled “Don’t Take It Badly.”

Last year, Nicholas Krgovich released his latest album Ducks. On Wednesday, the Vancouver performer and multi-instrumentalist announced the return of his long-dormant project P:ano, who will share their first new album in 19 years, ba ba ba, next month.

In June, Coldplay released “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” the first preview of their forthcoming Max Martin-produced album Moon Music. The band is back today with a new single titled “We Pray,” featuring Burna Boy, Little Simz, Elyanna, and Tini.

Seven years ago, Jai Paul and his brother A.K. Paul began their Paul Institute label by releasing two singles from London-based unknowns — one from Fabiana Palladino, and the other from Ruthven. At the time, Sean Nelson, the London singer and producer who records as Ruthven, was serving as a firefighter and working on music in his spare time. Now, he’s getting ready to release his debut album.

Back in March, James Cargill — the surviving member of the wonderful English dream-pop band Broadcast — announced two collections of demos. The first one Spell Blanket – Collected Demos 2006-2009 followed in May, and next month we’re getting Distant Call – Collected Demos 2000-2006, coinciding with what would’ve been the late Trish Keenan’s 58th birthday. It’ll be Broadcast’s final release.

In 2018, the British songwriter Ellis Ford ended his project Trust Fund — which, now that I think about it, is an outrageous thing to call your band. It turned out, however, that the Trust Fund was not quite dry. Ford revived Trust Fund in 2022, and he’s cranked out a steady stream of one-off singles since then. The most recent of those was “Has It Been A While,” which came out last month. Apparently, that’s the title track of the first new Trust Fund album since 2018’s Bringing The Backline.

Blair Howerton’s indie-folk project Why Bonnie will release the country-fried sophomore album Wish On The Bone next week, and we’ve posted the early tracks “Dotted Line,” “Fake Out,” and “Rhyme Or Reason.” Today, Howerton drops one last song before the LP shows up.

Sam Shepherd, the UK producer who makes meditative electronic music under the Floating Points name, is getting ready to follow up 2021’s Promises, his absolutely beautiful 2021 collaboration with the late jazz legend Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, with his new solo album Cascade. We’ve already posted “Birth4000,” “Del Oro,” and “Key103,” three of the tracks that will appear on Cascade. Today, Floating Points shares another one.

We last heard from Mallrat almost a year ago with a feature on Blu DeTiger’s “Cut Me Down.” Today the artist born Grace Shaw is back with a new single of her own. “Ray Of Light” is not a Madonna cover, but you could easily slide it into a dance mix next to Madge’s song. Produced by Troye Sivan/Tate McRae collaborator Styalz Fuego, it’s an uptempo electronic track with some mild hyperpop touches in the midst of all that crisp smoothness. It sounds nothing like the rock-oriented pop Shaw was releasing on 2022’s Butterfly Blue.

Tall Juan is getting ready to release his new album Raccoon Nights. The New York-based indie musician shared “Dark Hole” last month, and today he’s back with the pleasant Mac DeMarco collab “Talking To Myself.”

In less than a month, Tindersticks will share their new album Soft Tissue. The Nottingham indie crew has already released “New World,” “Nancy,” and “Falling, The Light,” and today they’re unveiling the final single “Always A Stranger.”

Portland’s Unto Others will share their new album Never, Neverland next month, and so far we’ve heard “Butterfly,” “Angel Of The Night,” and “Raigeki 雷撃.” Today, the goth-metal group is back with “Momma Likes The Door Closed.”

Himanshu Suri already bestowed one album upon us this year, and soon he’ll drop another. Following February’s Lapgan collab Lafandar, Heems will release his VEENA LP this Friday. He’s thus far shared the Vijay Iyer team-up “Manto,” “Dame,” and “Rakhi” with Pavvan and Ajji. Why not one more advance track?

In 2015, Scott Hermo Jr. unveiled the debut Boyscott album Goose Bumps. Since then, he’s cultivated a fan base as the surfy songs “Nova Scotia 500” and “Killer Whale” grow more and more viral. Today, nearly a decade later, he’s finally announcing its follow-up Spellbound. The breezy lead single “Rocky Road” is out now.

Back in May, Amyl And The Sniffers shared a pair of singles called “U Should Not Be Doing That” and “Facts.” Today, they’ve announced a new album called Cartoon Darkness, the follow-up to 2021’s Comfort To Me. Out in October, it’ll include “U Should Not Be Doing That” as well as the latest single “Chewing Gum.”

Recently, twee icons the Softies announced The Bed I Made, their first new album in 24 years. It’s out this Friday, and it’s shaping up to be a pretty sweet comeback; we’ve heard lead single “I Said What I Said” and its follow-up “Tiny Flame,” and today we have “Go Back In Time.”

Last year, Yaeji released With A Hammer, her debut full-length that made our list of the Best Albums Of 2023. Today, the NYC-via-Seoul artist is back with “booboo,” her first new music since then.
