An epic, epic fantasy film that was also a box office bomb is the number one movie on Netflix today. It’s interesting how some movies flow without a trace in theaters and then find new life in streaming. And although it took four years, the famous flop King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword is now receiving this treatment. According to the latest statistics from Flix Patrol, Charlie Hunnam’s vehicle is the most-watched title on Netflix in the United States today, up two spots from its last position on the chart.
Between his cult spy film Uncle’s man and a successful Disney remake Aladdin, director Guy Ritchie attempted to reinvent the legend of King Arthur and Camelot for a new generation. Unfortunately, whether it’s due to too much familiarity with the character, Ritchie’s specific take, or some other reason, Legend of the sword failed to have an impact on the public. But at least they’re now checking it en masse on streaming.
After the lost Prince Arthur Pendragon (Hunnam) is raised on the wicked streets of Londinium, he discovers that he truly is the real king after removing the legendary Excalibur blade from the stone. Though unwilling to take responsibility for his birthright, Arthur has no choice but to challenge his evil uncle Vortigern (Jude Law) in order to save his kingdom. Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Eric Bana, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Annabelle Wallis also feature.
Its worldwide turnover of $ 148.5 million doesn’t sound too shabby … until you realize king arthur had an exorbitant budget of $ 175 million. Needless to say, Ritchie’s plans for an Arthurian cinematic universe spanning six films never came to fruition and Warner Bros. reportedly suffered losses of $ 150 million. But, with the advantage of a few years away from any bad press, Netflix viewers clearly appreciate Legend of the sword for the nerdy but pleasant actor, it is.
