The coronavirus pandemic and ensuing quarantine protocols have had a major impact on the entire entertainment industry, but in the case of A24 Films’ upcoming horror release X, a surprising development was that writer/director Ti West also secretly shot a slasher prequel. While filming the project in New Zealand, West realized he had time to shoot the prequel. pearl using the same crew for the origin story, which features X actor Mia Goth as the main character. Goth co-wrote the screenplay with West, marking his first co-writing credit. pearl does not yet have a release date, with X in theaters March 18.
X is described: “In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their elderly, reclusive hosts catch them in the act, the actors find themselves fighting for their lives. ”
“It was really just betting on, ‘Well, if we’re writing a good script, why would they say no?'” West shared with the Los Angeles Time. “We joked that the most A24 thing we could do with this film was make two. For a studio that consistently makes challenging, increasingly interesting filmmakers, [projects]doing two movies at the same time fell in line with what’s so cool about what they do.”
Goth admitted that, even if the studio had chosen not to go ahead with the prequel, it would still have been a worthwhile experience.
“We didn’t know what was going to happen,” Goth pointed out. “We thought at the very least, if nothing comes of it, we’ll write the script and it can serve as a great backstory for Pearl and my understanding of my character.”
West even hinted that X might just be the first entry in a trilogy that pays homage to different eras of cinema.
“As much as X is this love letter to cinema, in a way pearl — it’s just a very different kind of cinema. Which also sets up an idea for the third movie, which has a whole different vibe,” the filmmaker teased. “I’ve always felt like if you want to do a slasher movie, you have to do a bunch of sequels.”
X hits theaters on March 18.
