Ana de Armas is an unexpected choice to play Marilyn Monroe, but the same could be (and was!) said of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, and now she’s Oscar nominee Kristen Stewart. The Cuban-born actress, whose scene in no time to die should have been the whole movie, was cast as Hollywood’s Golden Age actress in Andrew Dominik Blond. The movie comes out later this year, and there have been rumors that it’s been rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association of America – rumors that Dominik calls “a bunch of horse*t.” Corn Blond will have the to feel of an NC-17 film.
“It’s a demanding film,” he said. Daily screen. “If the public doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking public’s problem. This is not about running for public office. This is an NC-17 film about Marilyn Monroe, this is kinda what you want, right? I want to go see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.
Dominik also discussed working with de Armas. He said there was “work to do” to make her “sound American” as Monroe, but “she’s fucking amazing – the one thing nobody’s gonna complain about is [de Armas’] performance.” It is unknown when Blond will be released on Netflix due to theatrical release laws in France, but Dominik is hoping for a Cannes Film Festival premiere in May.
Until then, we still have deep waters to look forward to.
