A downtown arthouse cinema will reopen next month with an event that will attract moviegoers and potheads alike.
More than two years after going dark in mid-2020, Cinema Oasis announced this morning that it will welcome moviegoers back next month with its second edition of the Amazing Stoner Movie Fest. The event will screen films selected from submissions sent to the organizers. The best film will receive the “Golden Ganja” prize and 1,000 USD in cash.
The lack of iconic Thai stoner films was cited as the reason for organizing the event, said cinema co-owner Ing Kanjanavanit.
“The world has Cheech & Chong, Harold & Kumar, but there is no Piak & Odd,” said Ing. “It was an experiment to see if something like a Thai stoner movie existed.”
Composer Somtow Sucharitkul announced last week that his bizarro and self-referential wacky horror antics The conductor had already been chosen for the festival.
“Obviously this movie is best enjoyed when it’s wasted!” he wrote on his social media.
The Amazing Stoner Movie Fest will take place November 10-13 at Cinema Oasis. The cinema is located on Soi Sukhumvit 43 and can be reached on foot from BTS Phrom Phong. More details will be available at a later date.
The first Amazing Stoner Movie Festival took place in 2019 before cannabis use was legalized. Its 2020 edition has been postponed indefinitely due to the “plague apocalypse”.
Cinema Oasis is the brainchild of Ing Kanjanavanit and Manit Sriwanichpoom – two filmmakers behind the banned film Shakespeare must diea Thai adaptation by William Shakespeare macbeth.
