As Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with a focus on introducing new characters like Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) in Black Widowthe Eternals in their eponymous debut feature film, and Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios has always intended to continue a handful of film series from earlier phases. This part of the plan started with Spider-Man: No Coming Home and the next release Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and continues with the July one Thor: Love and Thunder. Notable for being one of only two Marvel film titles to achieve a fourth installment (Avengers: Endgame being the other), it also promises to follow through on the ideas of the soft reboot that has been Thor: Ragnarok. But how to continue the story when Asgard has been destroyed and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has abdicated his throne?

Let’s take a look at everything we know about love and thunder and see what we can find out about his place in Phase Four and the continued evolution of Thor Odinson.

What happens after the end of the world?

As the film takes place after Ragnarok and End of Gameit will start with Thor playing with the Guardians of the Galaxy and still trying to find his way after End of Game. Of course, we imagine his time with the group will be slightly different than originally planned, as his decision to leave Earth aboard the Milano (the Guardians’ ship) at End of GameThe conclusion of was supposed to lead to his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But after Guardians director James Gunn has been temporarily fired from that project, he traded places on Marvel Studios’ release schedule with love and thunder.

Based on this, we’re inclined to believe that Thor will leave the Guardians during the film, but along the way he’ll face the shock of a new Thor – or, at least, another worthy person to hold Mjolnir in. air and harness the power of Thor. That person is, naturally enough, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster – an idea taken directly from The Mighty Thor comics written by Jason Aaron – but some online chatter suggests his debut as Thor will have multiversal shenanigans behind it. No matter the Why from Jane’s Thor, the Odinson (as he eventually remembers in the comics) will have to deal with a literal identity crisis on top of new threats to his people, his friends, and his general thrill.

And while he left Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) to rule New Asgard, it’s unlikely that any part of the story ends there. Indeed, speaking in the years since End of Game suggests that Valkyrie will, at the very least, seek a queen to share her power as leader of the remaining Asgardians.

It all leads to an adventure that will stretch from the northern shores of New Asgard to the distant realms of space. And if Jane is from an alternate reality, it’s also possible we’ll see ancient Asgard again, though a restoration of that realm isn’t exactly necessary at this point. We’d even say that Thor’s journey is more interesting if he never finds his way back to his homeland.

Who is coming back for this adventure?

Hemsworth, of course, returns as Thor. This time, however, he finally has a better idea of who he is and what he wants – even if the Mutliverse itself demands that he be king. Also back from Ragnarok are Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, the current king of New Asgard, and writer-director Taika Waititi as Korg, the legendary rock-cool creature. Additionally, Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth return as Asgardian actors who played Loki, Odin, and Thor in the bizarre play Loki (Tom Hiddleston) commissioned that Thor glimpsed at the start of Ragnarok.

There are also a handful of actors returning from earlier Thor the films return for the fourth film. Jamie Alexander returns as Lady Sif, hopefully to explain her absence when Hela (Cate Blanchett) wiped out much of the Asgardian defense force and all of the Warriors Three. But the big headline-grabbing comeback is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. After discussing Waititi’s interest in adapting the Mighty Thor comic book (in which a cancer-stricken Jane becomes Thor), she signed. Presumably, the film will maintain Jane’s more earthly illness even though set photos prove the actor has a Thor physique for the film. Portman even suggested that the fight against cancer would go down in history.

Who’s new to the series?

love and thunder continues the crossover theme of films like Shang Chi and No coming home with Guardians cast members Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn reprising their roles as Peter Quill, Nebula, and Kraglin. Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff will also appear as Drax and Mantis, and Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel will also appear as Rocket and Groot. It’s unclear if the Guardians will appear throughout the film or if circumstances force them to move on to their next film as Thor flies off to confront Jane and their new nemesis, Gorr the Butcher God (Christian Bale). As his name suggests, he will be a serious threat to Asgardians and other pantheons. How do we know non-Asgardian gods will be in Gorr’s sights? Russell Crowe let slip on a radio show in 2021 that he played the Greek god Zeus in the film; the part is said to be a cameo. Additionally, Akosia Sabet will play a role credited as “Bastet God,” which suggests the Egyptian gods troubling Moon Knight (Oscar Isaac) on her Disney+ show could also make an appearance in the film.

Additionally, Melissa McCarthy will make a guest appearance as a performer playing Hela in a new Asgardian play – it’s unclear if she’s Asgardian or if Damon’s character has reached out to Earth actors – and rumors point to Simon Russell Beale will have a role somewhere in the film.

But for all these additions to the cast, there’s a surprising one. substraction: Hiddleston as Loki. Granted, the character isn’t exactly close to New Asgard or space itself yet – and that’s still a variant of the Loki seen in the Thor film series, which eventually died early in Avengers: Infinity War. Presumably, this first Loki’s sacrifice will be honored by a complete absence of the character throughout. love and thunderthe execution of. That said, it’s easy enough to think that the Loki or Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) variant might appear to let Thor (or Jane for that matter) know that a bigger problem is looming in the multiverse.

Beyond Korg’s voice, Waititi returns as director and co-writer – a first for the series as the two Thor director Kenneth Branagh and Thor: The Dark WorldAlan Taylor declined the opportunity to return. This time around, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson joins Waititi in the screenplay department, replacing Ragnarok editorial team consisting of Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. According to Waititi, the film is “the craziest film I’ve ever done”.

Others behind the camera include cinematographer Baz Idoine of The Mandalorian fame, publisher Maryann Brandon (Venom and its sequel), and production designer Nigel Phelps (Pokémon Detective Pikachu). strange doctor composer Michael Giacchino will bring his talents to love and thunder‘s score.

Marvel Studios household names Victoria Alonso and Louis D’Espostio serve as executive producers alongside Todd Hallowell, while Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige serves as producer.
