Everything you need to know about the new ‘Predator’ movie

For four decades, the Predator franchise gave us chilling classics (1987 Predator), grossly underrated sequels (Predator 2) and the odd turkey (The predator). In fact, if you cast watchable but barely memorable 2010s predators, these 35 years as a killer extraterrestrial have covered the entire critical spectrum. Sometimes the franchise bled a little, but they couldn’t kill it.

The good news is that the fifth and final addition to the canon, Prey, has skyrocketing levels of anticipation. It’s the first Predator flick through to head straight to streaming, but judging from what we’ve seen so far, it’s going to make for a killer night. The trailer features sleek visuals and an innovative 18th century setting – not to mention a new look and villainous antagonist.

It’s a whole new kind of Predator movie, so we asked director Dan Trachtenberg to tell us about it. Here’s what you need to know.

When does Prey air?

Prey will be on Hulu in the US and Disney+ elsewhere in the world. It airs from August 5.

What is Prey talking about?

In short? This is the first historical Predator film. Set 300 years ago on the Great Plains of America, a group of warriors from the Comanche Nation follow in the footsteps of Dutch, Dillon and co. facing a highly advanced alien hunter. A skilled but inexperienced Comanche hunter, Naru, engages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Predator.

Who runs Prey?

Prey is led by 10 Cloverfield Laneit’s Dan Trachtenberg and if that Cloverfield spin-off has everything to please, it will offer a surprise or two. walking stone screenwriter Patrick Aison wrote the screenplay.

Is there a trailer for Prey?

There is – and that’s a good thing. You can watch it below.

Who plays in Prey?

Playing Naru (pronounced ‘Nardu’) is The ice roadis Amber Midthunder. ‘There’s not a lot of dialogue in the film – it’s largely told through action,” the director explains, “and all of her emotionality really shines through.

Midthunder went through a grueling pre-movie workout regimen with his First Nations co-stars. ‘it was a month or two of physical training, not only to learn the choreography of the combat sequences, but also to learn how to work as a team with the other Comanche hunters,” explains Trachtenberg, who calls the Comanche warriors “the SEAL Six team of their time”.

Naru’s other Comanches are also played by First Nations actors Cody Big Tobacco, Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope Skye Pelletier, Harlan Kytwayhat and Tymon Carte.

And following in the footsteps of Kevin Peter Hall, who adapted to play the Predator in the 1987 film, is former professional basketball player Dane DiLiegro.

What’s new in this Predator movie?

Where to start? Most notably, alongside its groundbreaking cast, the film’s First Nations setting will be honored in a Comanche-language dub that will be available on Disney+. This is the first time a Hollywood movie has been released in Comanche (of course, it’s also available in English).

“Dubbing has come a long way,” jokes Trachtenberg. ‘It won’t look like an old Shaw Brothers kung fu movie. I think it adds a whole new layer of authenticity.

What’s new on the Predator itself?

A lot, says Trachtenberg. ‘I wanted [the Predator] be scarier than we’ve seen before,” he told Time Out. “He is smart and has advanced technology, which makes him even more difficult to face. But because the movie is set 300 years in the past, these things must feel a bit older than what we’ve seen before, but also far more advanced than we think our earthlings would be able to handle.

The ruthless space hunter-killer also has a new look. “I wanted to make sure the head was more proportional to the body,” the director explains. “This predator is much thinner and less armored than it has ever been. It’s more “creature”. It’s still huge and fierce.

How will the Comanche warriors fight the Predator?

The million dollar question is how 18th century warriors can take down a high tech interstellar crap killer. For Trachtenberg, who equates Prey to outsider stories like Rocky and 300the answer comes in the last reel of Predator. “At the end of the first movie, none of those big guns mattered,” he notes. ‘PredatorThe ending said: all these other things didn’t work and this other thing works. And the Comanches were the toughest warriors on this earth.

‘As exciting as the original film was, I don’t think Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character represents someone we can all see ourselves in. arrived?

Naru also has a secret weapon: his faithful dog, Sarii. “Their relationship is kind of a riff on Mad Max 2: Road Warrior, explains the director. “Naru and his dog are at the heart of the film.”

Is there a direct link between Prey and Predator?

There is of course a First Nations connection: mercenary Billy Sole, played by Sonny Landham, was part Sioux. Trachtenberg won’t question whether there’s a direct connection to the character (“We’ll see if there’s another connection,” he teases), but says Sole was a major inspiration for Prey.My friends went to see Predator and told me about the scene in which Billy fights the Predator on a bridge over a waterfall. But when I saw the movie, it wasn’t in it, and I wanted to see that movie. Spiritually, Prey is bound at this time.’

Where was Prey filmed?

Alberta in Canada replaces the film’s Midwestern setting. The difficult terrain and inhospitable weather will give the film The ghost-like authenticity, but also made for The ghost-like shooting conditions. “It was painful and intense,” Trachtenberg says of the shoot. “It was exhausting, especially for me, a guy who spends most of his time playing video games and watching movies!”

Will there be another Predator movie after Prey?

Very probably. “There are a lot of exciting ideas about what could be the next step for the franchise,” says Trachtenberg. “The things that excite me the most are the bolder swings and I think there are other things that haven’t been done before that can be done.” predator in Bridgertonsomebody?

Prey is streaming worldwide on Disney+ starting August 5.
