Janet Rucker, an eighth grade student at Legg Middle School, is the recipient of the 2022 Irma L. English Memorial Music Scholarship held by the Branch County Community Foundation.
Rucker is a straight-A student, takes advanced algebra and English classes, and is on the LMS’s “Major List.”
Music has always been part of Rucker’s life. She has been playing the piano since age seven, is a member of the Branch County Community Youth Choir, has performed in 10 musical theater productions and in a band since fifth grade, currently playing the flute.
One of Rucker’s goals is to improve his musical abilities. Spending time at a music camp this summer, all about music, will be an amazing way to help increase your musicality, Rucker said.
In other pursuits, Rucker is the first singles player on the LMS tennis team, a student council member, Youth in Government, and a member of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) of the Community Foundation.
She also enjoys caring for animals, reading, especially the Harry Potter series, and writing.
Rucker said she was grateful to receive this scholarship and excited to attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp this summer.
The ILE Memorial Music Scholarship Fund was established by the children of Irma Louise English to honor her, a lifelong resident of Branch County with a zest for life and a passion for music. In addition to showing their love and respect for their mother, her family wanted to give the students a chance to have a positive musical experience, just like them. All of her children attended summer music camps, which created happy and lasting memories.
The ILE Memorial Music Scholarship accepts applications in January each year for students planning to attend a summer music camp in Michigan.
Music students from Bronson, Coldwater, Pansophia, Quincy and Union City are eligible and scholarship applications can be found on the Community Foundation website at www.BrCoFoundation.org or by calling (517) 278- 4517.
