Director Sam Raimi gives a disappointing update on a possible Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire, admitting he currently has no plans for it.
Sam Raimi gives a disappointing update on a Spiderman 4 with Tobey Maguire. The duo collaborated on the director Spider Man trilogy in the 2000s, helping usher in a new era for superhero movies. All three episodes were successful at the box office, and a fourth film was planned. Unfortunately, Raimi Spiderman 4 was ultimately canceled as Sony took the franchise in a new direction. Several years later, Maguire reprized his iteration of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Coming Hometeaming up with Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland through this film’s multiverse story.
No coming home was a huge critical and commercial success, earning wide acclaim and $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office. The response has sparked renewed interest in seeing either Maguire or Garfield continuing to play Spider-Man in a new solo movie, though nothing has been announced at this point. Raimi said he was ready to do Spiderman 4 should the opportunity arise, but based on the latest updates, there doesn’t seem to be anything concrete on the table.
In an interview with Screen Rant to promote Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswe asked Raimi about the chances of his Spiderman 4 event. The director admitted that he had no plans in mind for such a film and expressed his uncertainty about it. Check out his response in the space below:
I don’t currently have any plans to do Spider-Man 4. And they’re so successful with the new Spider-Man series that I don’t know if it’s going to happen or not. I did not pursue this.
Raimi’s update is disappointing, but in some ways unsurprising. Right now, there doesn’t seem to be room for Spiderman 4 with Maguire in Marvel or Sony’s future plans. A Spiderman 4 for Holland’s Peter 1 is in development, and the young actor is reportedly headlining a new film trilogy. Sony is also continuing to work on its separate Spider-Man Cinematic Universe with Venom and Morbiuslike projects like Kraven the hunter and El Muerto are in development. Sony has yet to reveal the Spider-Man in this universe, but the safest bet would be Garfield’s return (unless there’s another redesign). After No coming homethere was also a massive push for Garfield The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should be a box office hit, the prospect of Raimi returning to his superhero roots with Spiderman 4 is certainly enticing. There are still many stories to be told in this world, especially since No coming home only provided the briefest updates on Maguire’s Peter 2 (notably, he’s back with MJ). If the director had an idea and the cast was on board, Sony should Raimi at least hear the pitch. As Raimi has said in the past, anything is possible with the multiverse now open. However, it is worth asking whether Spiderman 4 would reduce the emotional impact of Maguire’s famous film No coming home to return to. Maybe it’s for the best if it’s his departure.
