Sleep is one of the most important factors in overall health and well-being. However, we don’t have enough. Sometimes we don’t even realize how badly we sleep until things get really out of hand. The tech industry has gone out of its way to help, even developing sleep aid robots. Now, however, the ReST smart bed pushes sleep technology and smart home ideas even further.
A smart bed, you ask? Yes indeed
I was skeptical when I first heard about smart bed technology, even though I consider myself an advocate of the technology. However, when I looked at what the ReST smart bed entails, I decided I had to try it for myself.
This bed is partly memory foam mattress, partly air mattress. The ultimate model adds GelGrid technology for even more comfort. At its heart, however, is air mattress technology. ReST mattresses have three or five air pockets, depending on the model you purchase.
These air pockets correspond to different parts of your body: your shoulders, your lower back and your hips for the three-zone mattresses. The five-zone mattresses are customizable for your head, shoulders, lower back, hips and legs.
Medical-grade air pumps (two for queen-size mattresses and up) inflate and deflate these areas to keep you comfortable. A sensor mat provides real-time body pressure mapping so the bed can automatically adjust the firmness based on your position and individual pressure points.
Sleep “anatomy” and technology in a ReST smart bed
For the record, the model the company provided me for review is a queen model ReST Original smart bed with GelGrid. This is the one I’m going to talk about, but there are other options available that could be lighter or heavier on your wallet.
As a reminder, this mattress has five adjustable body zones to customize your comfort. The air chambers are made of medical grade polyurethane and the seams are RF welded to prevent air leakage.
Above the air chambers is the sensor mat which keeps track of the pressure your body is under. It reads 2,000 data points on the surface of the bed, transmitting this information to the air pumps.
At the top of the pressure mat mine includes the ReST gel grid to relieve pressure and promote air circulation. Then the “sleep skin” helps you stay cool and wicks away moisture. This component is removable and machine washable.
The air pumps are also medical grade and can connect to your home’s WiFi. Note that they don’t have to and can instead create their own Wi-Fi hotspots. Inside the ReST app, the sleep technology kicks in, connecting to the pumps to air to define your comfort level. You can even choose to view and track information about your sleep performance.
Yes, but is it comfortable?
My ReST mattress is by far the most comfortable I have ever enjoyed. Depending on your comfort preferences, you can manually adjust the firmness of each tube or have the pumps automatically adjust based on your firmness preferences. A near real-time heat map even shows the pressure your body is under.
There is also an option called Position. With this configuration, you can set different closures for the five body zones, but not just a “one size fits all” setting. When you use Position mode, you set your body zones separately to sleep on your side and your back. During the night, when you rock from side to side, the mattress automatically adapts to your position.
Overall, sleeping on the ReST smart bed should be as close as possible to extreme comfort. I literally feel the bed molding to my body, whether I’m on my side or on my back. The air pump makes noise, which is interesting to listen to while I doze off. He has never woken me up once because he is extremely quiet.
Experience Smart Sleep Technology
Honestly, the app is the only weak point of this bed. It’s feature packed and offers more insight into your sleep health than anything I’ve seen before. The night vision beta portion of the app keeps track of your sleep cycles, how long you slept, and how well you slept.
It also tracks your restless movements and even your breathing which is both cool and scary at the same time. In the future, ReST plans to integrate this data with the Apple Health app, but this support is not yet available. Even without HealthKit, the in-app sleep technology is definitely top notch. However, it is not perfect.
The downside to the app is that it is sometimes glitchy. It will lose communication with the air pumps, and I have no choice but to force quit the app and restart it. This is a very minor issue, however, and the developers are aware of and are working to fix it.
I think in our privacy-conscious age it is important to reiterate that the ReST Smart Bed does not have be connected to the Internet. You can, instead, just use the built-in WiFi networks created by the air pumps during setup. Obviously, this will make adjusting your settings more laborious, but the option is definitely viable.
Nitty-Gritty after-sales details
ReST offers very generous conditions for evaluating the bed and keeping it in top condition for the future. The company offers a 90-day money-back guarantee trial period. The bed is also covered by a 10-year non-proportional warranty. If any component of the bed fails under normal use, ReST will replace it free of charge (not even shipping) for 10 years.
For a limited time, ReST is offering a Black Friday sale. You can get $ 500 off your bed and a Adjustable base Malouf.
